Sweden sees Vietnam as important partner

On the occasion of National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan’s visit to Sweden, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son has worked with Swedish State Secretary for Foreign Affairs  Annika Soder on April 7.

            At  the meeting, State Secretary  Annika Soder gave her appreciation  of Vietnam’s socio-economic development  in recent years, saying   Sweden considers Vietnam as an important partner in Southeast Asia and  the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

            The two sides reviewed  recent developments in bilateral cooperation, including the opening of a direct flight between Stockholm and Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam. They  agreed to further promote exchange of visits  to create an impetus to stronger their multifaceted bilateral cooperation. . They also pledged to work closely and support each other at regional and international forums, especially at the United Nations.

They affirmed to support  global trade liberalization and agreed to accelerate the official signing of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA). Deputy FM Son applauded Sweden’s proposal to set up a strategic partnership with Vietnam in the fields of education-training, science-technology, and healthcare, thus encouraging Swedish firms  operating in these fields to increase  investment in Vietnam. He called for closer links between ministries and sectors of the two countries to realize the initiative.

On the  cooperation between the two foreign ministries, they agreed to hold the first political consultation at deputy minister level in Hanoi by the end of 2017, foster links in personnel training and soon negotiate  a visa exemption agreement for diplomatic passport holders to facilitate the exchange of visits. Deputy FM Son called on the Swedish Government to continue to facilitate  the Vietnamese community's life, business and integration in the country. The two sides also agreed to strengthen  links between  universities of the two countries and attract more Vietnamese students to  Sweden.

Alos at  the meeting, the two sides  compared notes on regional and international issues of mutual  concern, including the East Sea. The Vietnamese official congratulated Sweden on its election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2017-2018. State Secretary Soder affirmed that in this capacity , Sweden will  contribute to maintaining peace, stability and security in the world by the promotion of respect for  international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
